How to measure for your table

Tables come in all shapes and sizes, by following a few simple steps you will be able to order the right cloths for your tables.

Rectangular & Square Tables

Tip: For oval tables measure the long axis and the short axis and treat as the sides of a rectangle

Measure:

1. Length - Always make this the greatest side.

2. Width

3. Drop - The distance from the table top to the edge of the cloth.

Width of cloth required = Width of Table + 2 X Drop

Length of cloth required = Length of table + 2 X Drop

Compare these figures with the sizes of cloth and order the best match.

For example: A typical trestle table is 6 feet long and 2 feet 6 inches wide, what drop will a 70 x 108 table cloth give?

1. Length = 6 feet = 72 inches

2. Width = 2 feet 6 inches = 30 inches

Therefore the drop along the side will be: (70 inches - 30 inches) divided by 2

equals 20 inches

Likewise at the ends: (108 - 72)/2 = 18 inches

So a 70 x 108 cloth is the best fit for a trestle table, when both sides are in use, however if the table is to hold a buffet you will want cloth to the floor at the front, will the 70 x 108 still do the job?

Standard table height is accepted as 30 inches, therefore the width requirement of the cloth becomes: 30 inches of drop + 30 inches of table = 60 inches. That is there will be 10 inches of drop along the back of the buffet table. Again the 70 x 108 does the job!

Round Tables

It is a great myth that round tables MUST have a round table cloth! Round cloths do have advantages, if you need a drop to the floor then a round cloth is needed, however be aware of the disadvantages, round cloths are harder to handle and sooner or later become oval, they have to be fully hand folded at the laundry and therefore will always cost more than the equivalent area square cloth.

When measuring a round table it is usual to quote the DIAMETER not the RADIUS. The diameter is the straight line from edge to edge through the centre, the radius is half the diameter.

For example: Which cloth will fit a round table of diameter 5 feet and drop half way to the floor?

The diameter is 5 feet = 60 inches

The standard table height is 30 inches, therefore a drop of 15 inches is required.

Measurement for the cloth is 60+15+15 = 90 inches.

Therefore a 90 x 90 square cloth will fit, with an average drop of 15 inches, slightly more at its corners.
